Originally written as a satire on feminism, women’s education, and Darwinian evolution, Lamplighters’ own version modifies this slightly to reflect modern views. In this year with so many women running for president, it will be fun to see what Gilbert and Sullivan and Lamplighters will create together on these oh, so timely topics!
This is the show for which the Lamplighters won Best Production (and a slew of other awards) at the 2nd Annual International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival in Buxton, England, in 1995. Princess Ida is one of the lesser-known jewels of the musical theater. A fantastic show, with lots of good roles and plenty for the chorus to do.
ALL ROLES ARE OPEN AND AVAILABLE
Princess Ida – Soprano – intelligent, independent, strong-minded. Has founded a women’s university; wants no part of the marriage with Prince Hilarion arranged for her in infancy by her father, King Gama. Holds rather strong views on the worth of men. Need strong middle voice and good held high B-flat.
Lady Psyche – Soprano – professor of humanities at Princess Ida’s university. Think of the nice teachers you adored in school. Develops a soft spot for Cyril.
Melissa – Mezzo-soprano – daughter of Lady Blanche, a student at the university; Florian is the first man she’s ever seen, and she likes what she sees.
Lady Blanche – Contralto or mezzo-soprano – professor of abstract science at Ida’s university. Resentful of her status as #2; plots to overthrow Ida so that she can “rule the roast.” Note: her solo “Come, mighty must” will in all probability be cut; while good singing is necessary, this is more an acting than a singing role.
Prince Hilarion – Tenor – Ida’s child-bridegroom, King Hildebrand’s son. A true romantic — believes he can convince Ida to honor their babyhood marriage vows.
Cyril – Tenor – Hilarion’s friend; needs to be a strong tenor with a great sense of comedy. Has a “drunk scene” and a lot of sarcastic/smart-aleck lines.
Florian – Baritone – also Hilarion’s friend; more serious than Cyril but still a high-spirited young man.
King Gama – Patter-baritone – Ida’s father, an irascible old man who is not well-liked but “can’t think why;” it’s pretty apparent to everyone else.
King Hildebrand – Baritone – Hilarion’s father, a good king, a strong father, has a bit of a temper and much prefers it when things go the way he wants them to.
Arac – Bass or dark baritone – Gama’s eldest son, Ida’s brother – a warrior, not terribly bright, very possibly a reason for Ida’s disdain for men. Has a solo with Handel-like coloratura.
Guron/Synthius – Basses/baritones – Gama’s other sons. Even dumber than Arac.
CHORUS OF COURTIERS, STUDENTS AND SOLDIERS
As with most Gilbert & Sullivan shows, the chorus is a very important part of the action and has much stage time and wonderful music. We need 6 to 8 each soprano, altos, tenors and basses.

AUDITIONS ARE HELD AT THE LAMPLIGHTERS REHEARSAL HALL, 469 BRYANT STREET (between 2nd and 3rd Streets in the South of Market area of San Francisco).
Please come to the preliminary audition with two contrasting songs in English, preferably from opera, operetta or classic musical theatre, that you feel will show off your voice well. You may be asked to sing only one song, but have two prepared. An accompanist will be provided. Bring your sheet music in the key in which you will sing.
Also bring your headshot and resume, and your calendar so that you can give us any conflicts that you may have during the rehearsal period. If you are needed for a callback, you will be notified.
CALLBACKS WILL BE HELD SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 6:00-10:00 PM BY INVITATION APPOINTMENT ONLY – YOU WILL RECEIVE AN EMAIL INVITATION!
ALL ROLES ARE CAST WITH NON-EQUITY; NON-AGMA; Stipends for leads will range from $350 – $700.00, depending on size and difficulty of the role and whether double cast. All chorus members will be offered expense reimbursement up to $200 to help offset costs such as purchasing tights and footwear, travel and lodging, etc.
REHEARSALS will begin in early December 2019. and will be held Sunday – Thursday evenings. Some Friday and Saturday rehearsals may be scheduled as opening night approaches. A tentative schedule will be available at the auditions, and more detail will be provided as soon as available.
THE VOCAL SCORE of Princess Ida is available at music stores and online sources. Cast members are required to purchase their own scores. Cost is around $15.
PLEASE NOTE: As with any period production, cast members may be required to provide special undergarments that may be necessary (e.g., women, Merry Widows; men, dance belts), as well as tights and footwear. Also, it may be necessary for men to alter or eliminate facial hair.
