Request for Proposals

After decades of cultivating the Bay Area’s richest Gilbert & Sullivan tradition, Lamplighters Music Theatre is thrilled to announce our first-ever Request for Proposals for a Stage Director for our upcoming Summer Show—an open call designed to welcome fresh visionary voices into our artistic community while honoring the satirical brilliance that has defined our company.

Whether you’re a longtime G&S aficionado who knows every patter song by heart, or a theater maker discovering the canon’s surprising contemporary relevance for the first time, we seek collaborators who understand that Gilbert & Sullivan’s greatest gift was holding a mirror to society—revealing the absurdity of power, privilege, and pretension through the vehicle of exquisite musical comedy.

The Creative Challenge
We are seeking directors interested in staging either The Pirates of Penzance or Iolanthe. We encourage bold, cohesive concepts that channel contemporary resonance through classic Gilbert & Sullivan satire—whether exploring “the emperor has no clothes,” rigged systems of power, or that quintessential Gilbertian critique of “skim milk masquerading as cream.” We’re looking for that perfect G&S balance: irreverent social commentary delivered with musical precision and satirical joy.
