Lamplighters Music Theatre was founded in 1952 by Orva Hoskinson and Ann Pool Mac Nab. The intention was to establish a San Francisco based Gilbert and Sullivan company that thoroughly respected the material in an artistic, elegant and polished way.

The first performance was H.M.S. Pinafore, performed on October 3rd, 1952 at the Carousel Little Theatre in San Carlos, CA. This same production was then performed to a packed house at the Crossroads Theatre in San Francisco, opening on October 24th of that year.

Since then we have produced the entire Gilbert & Sullivan canon as well as other light opera and musical theatre classics such as Candide, The Merry Widow, Die Fledermaus, Of Thee I Sing, My Fair Lady, and A Little Night Music. Every year since 1965, we have also written and performed an original full-length work for our annual Gala - usually a topical spoof set to Sullivan's music with original book and lyrics. Titles include Major General Hospital, Upside-Downton Abbey, Rosencrantz & Guildenstern's Excellent Adventure, and Lord of the Things.

The Lamplighters are now recognized as one of the world’s pre-eminent Gilbert & Sullivan companies and have been honored with many awards, including the Grand Prize at the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival in England. We have received local honors in nearly every performance, direction, and design category, including Bay Area Theater Critics’ Circle Awards for Best Original Show for Rosencrantz and Guildenstern’s Excellent Adventure and A Song to Sing, O!, the Story of Gilbert and Sullivan. We have won an Emmy Award for our telecast of Trial by Jury, recorded a CD at Skywalker Sound studios, and appeared at Stern Grove and Villa Montalvo as part of their summer concert series.

Lamplighters Music Theatre acknowledges that our past productions of The Mikado were performed in traditional style, and may have given offense to people in the Asian community. We sincerely apologize for any cultural insensitivity we may have been guilty of. We are mostly a Gilbert & Sullivan company, The Mikado is an important part of the Gilbert & Sullivan repertoire, and the historical photos on our website represent our past.
